2000s TV show revival recasts a major character: Buzz

A revival of a popular 2000s TV show is recasting a major character.

E! News reports the four-episode revival of “Malcolm in the Middle” on Disney+ won’t include Erik Per Sullivan as Malcolm’s younger brother, Dewey. Actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will take over the role alongside returning stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson.

Per Sullivan hasn’t appeared in any movies or TV shows since 2010, suggesting the former child star has retired from Hollywood.

Ellsworth-Clark, whose credits include “Wynonna Earp,” “Nightmare Alley” and “Fargo,” is not the only new cast member. Variety reports Anthony Timpano will play Malcolm’s youngest brother Jamie (who was a baby in the original series played by twins James and Lukas Rodriguez) and Vaughan Murrae will play new non-binary family member Kelly, who was teased in the series finale when Lois (Kaczmarek) showed a positive pregnancy test.

“Macolm in the Middle” ran from 2000 to 2006 on Fox, following Malcolm (Muniz) as a child prodigy in a dysfunctional family. The original series won multiple awards, including seven Emmys, a Peabody and a Grammy.

The new episodes coming to Disney+ will center on Malcolm returning home for his parents’ 40th anniversary party with his own daughter, Leah (Keeley Karsten), and girlfriend Tristan (Kiana Madeira). A premiere date has not been announced.
