2024 Rock Hall induction ceremony makes broadcast TV debut on New Year’s Day

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Music fans who missed the live Disney+ telecast of the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which took place Oct. 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse i Cleveland, will have another chance to catch the really big show. An edited version of the ceremony makes its broadcast premiere at 8 p.m. New Year’s Day on ABC (WEWS-TV Channel 5 locally).

The three-plus hour shindig welcomed Cher, Kool & The Gang, A Tribe Called Quest, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Mary J. Blige, Ozzy Osbourne and Dave Matthews Band into the hallowed hall of rock. The Musical Influence Award was presented to Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton. Dionne Warwick, Jimmy Buffett, MC5 and Norman Whitfield received the Musical Excellence Award. Suzanne de Passe will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award.

Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Frampton, Kool & The Gang, and Warwick performed at the ceremony.

Guests, presenters and other performers included: Zendaya, Julie Roberts, Jack Black, Dua Lipa, Jelly Roll, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, Common, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Dr. Dre, Demi Lovato, Tom Morello, Chuck D, Method Man, James Taylor, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Mac McAnally, Roger Daltrey, Sammy Hagar, Slash, Ella Mai, Chad Smith, Billy Idol, Wolfgang Van Halen, Zakk Wylde, Robert Trujillo, Maynard James Keenan, Steve Stevens, Andrew Watt, Lucky Daye and The Roots.

The ceremony featured one of the shortest induction speeches ever, given by Ozzy Osbourne, who took less than two minutes to get out of the way of his star-studded musical tribute. “The Prince of Darkness” was feted by a gaggle of heavy music stars, including Tool’s Maynard Keenan, Wolfgang Van Halen, Billy Idol and seemingly every long-haired guitar shredder of the last 30 years, and Jelly Roll singing one of his favorite songs, “Mama, I’m Coming Home.”

The ceremony also featured one of the longest induction speeches by the surviving members of A Tribe Called Quest who rambled on for several minutes before late member Phife Dawg’s father, Walt, quickly charmed the crowd with a few music-related dad jokes.

Performances included Cher and Dua Lipa duetting on “If I Could Turn Back Time,” a fun and funky medley of hits from Kool & The Gang, including “Celebration” with singer James “J.T.” Taylor, a solo acoustic take on Jimmy Buffet’s wistful “A Pirate Looks at 40,” from Dave Matthews, and Peter Frampton and Keith Urban performing Frampton’s classic rock radio staple, “Do You Feel Like I Do.”
