Mick Jagger typically takes on lead vocals for The Rolling Stones. His familiar voice has been the cornerstone for countless rock hits over the decades. However, there are a fair few songs that feature Jagger’s songwriting partner, Keith Richards, behind the mic. Find three of our favorite Richards led songs, below.
“Coming Down Again” has a robust atmosphere about it. The thick blend of instrumentation is nearly hypnotizing–the near constant refrain doesn’t hurt either. It’s easy to get swept up in this song. Richards’ vocals are the perfect vehicle for this song’s unique attitude.
Coming down again, coming down again
Coming down again, coming down again
Share your thoughts, there’s nothing you can hideShe was dying to surviveI was caught, oh, taken for a ride
She was showing no surprise
Coming down again, coming down again
Where are all my friends? Coming down again
Richards shines on this bluesy ballad. His gruff vocals were favored over Jagger’s, somewhat, polished ones for “All About You”–and it’s not hard to figure why. Richards adds something grounded to this love letter to American blues music.
Why must I spend it with you?If the show must go onLet it go on without youSo sick and tired hanging around with jerks like you
Who’ll tell me those lies
And let me think they’re true? What am I to doYou want it, I got it too
Though the lies might be true

The Stones have many driving anthems that are more popular than “Happy,” but this Richards led tune does a fine job in measuring up to them in terms of appeal. Richards flexes the expanse of his vocals here, growling out notes for emphasis.
Always took candy from strangersDidn’t wanna get me no tradeNever want to be like papa
Working for the boss every night and day
I need a love to keep me happyI need a loveBaby, won’t you keep me happy?Baby, won’t you keep me happy?
Baby, please keep me
