
There’s still a couple months left to file your 2024 tax return, but those who have already filed may already be asking a key question: Where’s my refund?
Well, according to the Internal Revenue Service, that answer will depend on when you filed.
And for those who have yet to submit their income-tax returns, April 15 is the last day.

When will I get my tax refund 2025?
The length of time it takes to receive your tax refund depends on how long it takes to process.
According to the IRS, an e-filed return can take up to 21 days. Mailed and amended returns can take four weeks or more.
If your tax return requires extra review or correction, you could be waiting even longer to receive your refund.
How to check tax return status
To check the status of your refund, use the IRS refund tool.
Status updates will appear:
- Twenty-four hours after you e-file a current-year return.
- Three or four days after you e-file a prior-year return.
- Four weeks after you file a paper return.
To check your status, you will need:
- Your Social Security Number or individual taxpayer ID number.
- Your filing status.
- The exact refund amount on your return.
How will I get my tax refund?
You can choose how you’d like to receive your refund, and certain options may bring you your money faster.
A direct deposit is the quickest way to receive your refund by have it transmitted into a checking, savings or retirement account. You can also split your deposit between three accounts.
If you opt for a paper check, it will be mailed to the address on your return. Make sure to notify the IRS if this address changes.
Some banking cards and apps will also allow your deposit to be sent to a prepaid debit card or mobile payment app.
You may also opt for your return to be deposited into a traditional, Roth or SEP-IRA account.
