Lowe’s will close all stores for 24 hours: Here’s why

Lowe’s, one of the largest home-improvement retailers in the United States, will temporarily shut down operations at all of its U.S. stores later this month.

The company announced that all Lowe’s locations will be closed for 24 hours on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, to allow employees a day off to spend with family. The move places Lowe’s among several national chains taking similar steps to mark the holiday.

“I’m extremely proud of the commitment of our 300,000 associates who support our communities while providing excellent customer service—not only in spring, but all year-round. In recognition of our teams’ continued hard work, we are pleased to provide a well-deserved day off so they can spend Easter with their loved ones,” said Marvin Ellison, Lowe’s chairman and CEO in a statement.

How Many Lowe’s Stores Are There in the US?

As of March 2025, Lowe’s operates 1,751 stores across the United States. Texas hosts the most locations with 144, followed by Florida with 132. In comparison, The Home Depot runs over 2,000 stores, with California, Texas, and Florida leading in store count.

The move mirrors previous holiday closures for the company, which has consistently closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, the decision to pause for Easter underlines a shift toward recognizing spring holidays as part of broader workplace wellness strategies.

Despite the physical store closures, Lowe’s customers will still be able to shop online through Lowes.com. The company’s website will remain active during the one-day pause in physical operations.

Holiday closures among major U.S. retailers are not unusual. In 2024, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Michaels also closed for Easter Sunday. Meanwhile, chains such as Walmart, CVS, and Trader Joe’s stayed open.

Why Do Stores Close on Easter Sunday?

In the United States, many retailers choose to close on Easter Sunday as a gesture of respect for the holiday’s religious significance and to provide employees with a guaranteed day of rest.

Easter, a major Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, is traditionally observed as a family- and faith-centered occasion.

While not a federal holiday, Easter Sunday is still recognized in the retail calendar as a day when foot traffic tends to be lower, particularly in the morning.

Easter Sunday 2025 is expected to see similar patterns, with customers advised to check store websites for local hours.
