How Grizzlies, Hornets reacted after Jaylen Wells’ hard fall, broken wrist

Grizzlies forward Jaylen Wells suffered a broken wrist after a scary fall in Tuesday’s game against the Hornets, and the Spectrum Center was silent as everyone waited to see if Wells would be OK.

The game had to be stopped as Wells was taken to the hospital, but Grizzlies center Zach Edey said the team learned at halftime that Wells was stable.

Memphis eventually cruised to a 124-100 win.

“Puts everything into perspective,” Grizzlies interim coach Tuomas Iisalo said postgame. “Seeing that situation and seeing Jaylen there, tough situation for everybody. He’s an incredibly tough kid, had a great season and yeah, he’s in all of our thoughts.”

After a two-handed transition dunk, Wells was undercut by Hornets wing KJ Simpson. The two collided and Wells fell hard to the floor. Medical personal placed Wells on a stretcher with his head and neck stabilized. Iisalo said postgame that Wells had suffered a broken wrist.

“Pretty emotional,” Hornets coach Charles Lee said. “Hard to witness something like that in the heat of the game.”

Said Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant: “Just going down there, first thing I seen was blood. And I’ve got a weak stomach. It’s tough. Especially for somebody who’s playing a lot of minutes and being real productive for us on both ends.”

Wells has had a very successful rookie season, going from a second-round pick to a starter for nearly the entire season who’s been the Grizzlies’ top on-ball defender this season. He routinely guards the best perimeter player on the other team and has drawn rave reviews for his unique style of pressure defense.

Simpson was assessed a flagrant-2 foul and ejected after the play. He apologized to Wells on social media early Wednesday morning, writing on X that he’s “just extremely sorry.”

The Grizzlies are back in action on Thursday night (8:30 p.m., TNT) when they host the Timberwolves at FedExForum.
