Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane has revealed he has been diagnosed with ALS.

The actor, who played Mark Sloan on the medical drama and is also known for starring as Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, revealed that he has the terminal neurodegenerative disorder in a new interview.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he told People. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

The actor added that he will continue to work, and will begin filming the third season of Euphoria very soon.

“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a type of motor neurone disease that affects nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain, causing loss of muscle control, and has no cure (via Mayo Clinic).

Over time, the disease can cause problems with breathing, speaking and eating, with a survival rate in most cases of three to five years, though in rare cases some can survive for 20 years or more (via the Muscular Dystrophy Association).

Alongside Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, Dane has appeared in Charmed, X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Last year, the actor opened up about his exit from Grey’s Anatomy, recalling his issues with addiction and growing fame at the time.

“I didn’t leave so much as I think I was let go,” he told he told Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. “They didn’t let me go because of that [alcohol and drug addiction], although it definitely didn’t help.

“If you take the whole eight years I was on Grey’s, I was f**ked up longer than I was sober, and that was when things started going sideways for me.”
