Island of Puerto Rico in total blackout

(TNND) — The entire island of Puerto Rico has been plunged into darkness since noon on Wednesday, leaving 1.4 million residents without power.

Kelley Minnaugh, visiting from Virginia with her daughter, described the situation: “Everything is out and with the heat it’s tough to stay cool. The power came on for 2 hours last night but then right out again.”

Hospitals are currently operating on generators to maintain patient care, while local shops with generators offer limited food and ice, though long lines persist. “A lot of local shops have generators so you can get limited food and ice, but the lines are very long,” said a visitor.

The blackout has also caused traffic chaos, as street lights are out, making intersections difficult to navigate.

Gas stations are experiencing long lines as residents and tourists alike seek fuel for generators. Kate Lynch, vacationing from Ohio with her family, said, “The lines are insanely long, everyone is looking for gas to fill up generators.”

Officials anticipate that 90% of customers will have power restored within 48 to 72 hours.

Puerto Rico has been grappling with power outages since Hurricane Maria struck the island in September 2017 as a Category 4 storm, further complicating efforts to rebuild the already fragile power grid.
