Authorities have contained a large, multi-alarm fire that erupted on the roof of a seven-story apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, fire officials said Friday.
A call about the blaze on East 95th Street, between Second and First avenues, came in shortly after 10 a.m. First responders were there within 4 minutes, officials said.
Flames spread to the cockloft, the area between the top-floor ceiling and the roof, and three penthouses on the top floor, officials said. It did not reach adjacent buildings.
About 40 units were on scene. Ultimately, 170 firefighters and EMS personnel responded. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries, officials said. The nature of those wasn’t immediately clear.
Video posted to the Citizen app shows orange flames leaping from the roof as thick black smoke spews over the skyline.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The city’s Office of Emergency Management advised people to avoid the area. Sensitive residents may also want to close their windows to avoid smoke.
The Red Cross also responded.
