‘Okami’ Sequel Video Game in the Works From Hideki Kamiya

A sequel to the beloved game “Okami” is in the works at Capcom with original game director Hideki Kamiya.

The untitled game is a followup to the 2006 action-adventure game developed by the now-closed Clover Studio and released for PlayStation 2.

“Okami” is set in a fictional version of classical Japan and uses Japanese mythology and folklore to tell a story about how the country was saved from darkness by Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, who takes on the form of a white wolf. The player takes on the role of Amaterasu and gameplay takes place in “Okami’s” Celestial Brush game system.

The “Okami” sequel is being co-developed between three studios that include various alums who worked on the original game: M-TWO, Machine Head Works and Clovers, which Kamiya is a member of.

Capcom describes the game as “a new adventure in the same vein as ‘Okami,’” adding: “What will the new adventures of Amaterasu and company be like? It will be some time before we greet you again, but we really hope you look forward to this project.”

The title was announced out of the 2024 Game Awards on Thursday and in good company with several other big reveals including new Naughty Dog game franchise “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,”“It Takes Two” creator Hazelight Studios’ next game “Split Fiction” and the new teaser trailer for “Borderlands 4.”

When Game Awards host Geoff Keighley set up the “Okami” sequel announcement, he prefaced it by saying this reveal was for a project that would be coming after 2025.
