James Gunn Reveals ‘Superman’ Trailer Release Time, New Footage Live Now

We are just a day away from the release of the first Superman trailer, and what is officially the launch of live-action DCU content, even if some past James Gunn projects appear to have been made quasi-canon.

In a new video in which he relays his excitement for the film, Gunn links to a YouTube countdown video where the trailer will appear. That countdown ends on Thursday, December 19 at 9:53 AM ET. My guess is that there will be some sort of additional countdown then, and it will actually premiere right at 10 AM ET.

Interestingly, this teaser trailer is being promoted with…another teaser trailer. When you go to that video you will see a 30 second clip that features the first actual footage from the film. It’s a lot of people looking up, the tagline of the film, and while most we don’t know, in the first shot we do see Lois Lane, Cat Grant and Jimmy Olsen, among others. The clip ends with Superman flying up into the sky, though we don’t get a good look at the costume or anything.

Even though it may look like it from this clip, this is not relaying the “first” appearance of Superman, as Gunn has said that he is already an established hero at this point. My theory is that these people are probably not even looking at Superman, but instead that giant threat that is seen out the window of the first Superman poster, but I could be wrong.

In recent days ahead of this trailer’s release, we have also gotten a full synopsis for the film:

“James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a SUPERMAN who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

Gunn has now done a few interviews about the film in which he talks about how it’s not going to be quite as outwardly comedic as his other DC and Marvel projects, Suicide Squad, Peacemaker and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Here’s what he told The Wrap:

“There’s plenty of humor in it. People like Rachel (Brosnahan) are so funny and David (Corenswet) is very funny as well, so there’s humor in it, but it’s trying to create something that is grounded, but also it’s an incredibly fanciful world, it’s fantasy, it’s taking from other things like ‘Game of Thrones,’ where it’s this universe where superheroes actually exist.”

In terms of where there is comedy, it’s easy to see how a lot of that probably will in fact be from Lois Lane, given that Rachel Brosnahan spent five seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel being hilarious. When she was cast, out of anyone cast in the DCU so far, she felt like the most perfect choice.

So, see you tomorrow at 10 AM ET sharp. Look up (at your screen).
