Wintry mix, sloppy roads late today into Thursday

Happy Hump Day! We’re making our way through this rather quiet morning with relaxed winds, comfortable temperatures, and no big travel hazards. Outside of some leftover wetness on area roadways, there’s no reason to have to carve out extra time for your morning drive. Along with that positive change of pace for the morning commute, temperatures are in the 30s with partly to mostly cloudy skies.

Highs will tap out in the upper 30s to near 40 this afternoon with thickening clouds. Those clouds will be associated with an incoming, messy system for late this afternoon through Thursday morning. A wintry mix will break out by the late afternoon and will continue to sprawl out during the evening drive home. Some heavier bands of snow could snarl travel along portions of I-89 south, so it will be best to take it extra slow whether the roads are snowy or wet.

Overnight into Thursday morning, colder and drier air continue to pile in. Brisk northwest winds, leftover snow showers and slick spots will be likely for the Thursday morning drive with temperatures tumbling through the 20s/30s. Accompanying our falling temperatures will be some extra upslope snow shower activity through the afternoon.

We’ll slide back into the upper teens to low 20s by the evening drive home as our snow showers shut off. Snowfall totals from this mid to late week system will average a dusting to 4 inches outside of broad valley locations such as the Champlain Valley and Lower Connecticut River Valley. Our mid to high slopes will likely receive 4 to 8 inches before all is said and done.

Late Week Preview: Friday is looking more and more interesting with another fast moving system trying to zip by the Northeast. There’s the chance for additional snow showers Friday into Saturday. If you have late week and early weekend travel plans, make sure you’re keeping up to date on the latest forecast.
