The more Star Wars and its stories have expanded over the years, the more I have changed the way I approach each new project. Where once I would dive into each new movie, book, or show with high hopes and even higher enthusiasm, I now apply a “no expectations” rule for myself. It has particularly paid off, so far, with Skeleton Crew.
I went into this new Disney+ Star Wars series excited but level-headed. I’m the kind of Star Wars fan who will genuinely look forward to — and for the most part, even wholeheartedly enjoy — any new story set in a galaxy far, far away simply because it’s Star Wars. For this show, I wanted to look forward to something new without expecting too much from it. And that’s why it has quickly become my favorite show of the year, even only a few episodes in.
As fans — especially online — we often fall into this deadly trap of expecting a show to fulfill all of our wildest, headcanon-fulfilling dreams. And that is almost always a mistake. The higher your expectations, the more your disappointment might sour the experience for you, whether you want it to or not.
That’s why I went into Skeleton Crew with no expectations — knowing I would enjoy it no matter what without giving myself any goalposts to measure that by. The show didn’t exceed my expectations because I didn’t have any. I just wanted to have fun — and the show is a blast! It is exactly what I hoped it would be, and I am enjoying it even more because of that.
My only “standard” for the show was that I could find things that I liked about it. There are plenty of those. It’s funny, it’s intriguing, and I look forward to each new episode more than I’ve looked forward to any new Star Wars all year. This is what happens when you promise yourself to enjoy something simply because you’re lucky enough to get to experience it as it’s happening. I highly recommend it.
