WASHINGTON — After months of anticipation, Nintendo has released a trailer for its new flagship console, the Nintendo Switch 2, ahead of its planned launch later this year.
The console is an upgraded version of the original Nintendo Switch, and the trailer shows off some of the biggest upgrades: A larger screen size, bigger controllers and a stronger stand for on-the-go gameplay.
While specific specs for the device haven’t been revealed yet, Nintendo advertised that it will be able to play games for the original Switch, as well as games specifically designed for the new system.
The company promised more details at a “Nintendo Direct” showcase on Wednesday, April 2.
After that event, customers in select cities will be able to get a hands-on experience with the new console.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events will let users try out how some Switch games feel on the new console. In North America, these are the four cities where events will be hosted:
- New York, April 4-6, 2025
- Los Angeles, April 11-13, 2025
- Dallas, April 25-27, 2025
- Toronto, April 25-27, 2025
Registration for the events will begin on Jan. 17. For info on how to register, as well as details about cities hosting events on other continents, click here.
The original Nintendo Switch debuted in 2017, and quickly became one of the highest-selling consoles in history. Nintendo sold more than 140 million of its hybrid system over the past eight years, making it the third-highest selling system in the world, behind only the Nintendo DS and Playstation 2.
It is a unique hybrid console, which can be played either “docked” — connected to a TV — or taken on the go as a portable system. The Switch also features “Joy-Cons,” which are detachable controllers that allow users to play motion-centric games with the gyometric sensors or play co-op when traveling. The Switch 2 appears to feature larger Joy-Cons with a new system to connect them to the console.
