Chad’s ruling party, the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), achieved a decisive victory in last month’s legislative elections, securing 124 of the 188 parliamentary seats, according to the final results announced by the Constitutional Council on Tuesday.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno hailed the results as a milestone in the nation’s democratic progress. “We are on the verge of definitively turning the page of transition to move resolutely towards the development of our dear homeland. The future is before us. It’s up to us to build it with strength and faith,” he said in a statement. The president also praised the peaceful conduct of the elections.
The elections marked a significant step forward for gender parity in Chad’s parliament. Minister of Women and Child Protection Amina Priscille Longoh highlighted the progress, noting that 64 women, or 34.04 percent of parliamentarians, were elected—more than double the 15 percent representation from the last legislature in 2011.
