‘Dune: Part Two’ Star Knocks Oscars for Snubbing Denis Villeneuve: “Makes No Sense”

Dune: Part Two star Josh Brolin chided the Academy for not nominating director Denis Villeneuve for his acclaimed work on the blockbuster sci-fi sequel.

Brolin took to his Instagram stories to point out that “it makes no sense” that Villeneuve was snubbed for best director given the film racking up five nominations — including best picture.

“Apparently, I’m going to quit acting because Denis Villeneuve didn’t get nominated, and this is just how this thing works,” the Gurney Halleck actor said. “Makes no sense to me. That’s okay. It’s an amazing film. I think it was even better than the first one. But the people who have gotten accolades sure deserve it and happy to be a part of it.”

Given that Villeneuve is a producer on the film (along with Mary Parent, Cale Boyter and Tanya Lapointe), he could still win an Oscar if Dune: Part Two takes home the award for best picture.

Brolin also congratulated the Dune: Part Two creatives and crew who were nominated in other categories, such as cinematography, production design, visual effects and sound.

For best picture, the the Dune sequel has a lot of competition. The film is up against Anora,

The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance and Wicked.

Here is a full list of nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards, and a list of the biggest snubs and surprises.
