Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, who was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior by multiple massage therapists in an investigation by The Baltimore Banner, denied those accusations in a statement Thursday, calling the allegations “unequivocally false.”
According to the story, six massage therapists who worked with Tucker between 2012 and 2016 accused him of misbehavior. Two spas banned him from returning, according to the report.
NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said the league is looking into the matter, and that it became aware of the allegations from the reporter investigating the story, “as they were not previously shared with the NFL.” Tucker has not been charged with a crime, and there is not a civil suit filed against him at this time.
The Banner reported that most of the six women who shared firsthand accounts of Tucker’s alleged actions did not know each other prior. His alleged misbehavior includes exposing his genitals, brushing them with his penis and leaving bodily fluid on tables, which the workers said appeared to be ejaculate.
One therapist told the paper she informed Tucker before a massage that his wife was a client of hers. Despite that, Tucker repeatedly exposed himself, she alleged in the story.
“Our clients have been afforded comfort in their experiences being investigated and heard by the public and validation in knowing that they are not alone,” Michael Belsky and Catherine Dickinson, attorneys representing the massage therapists, told The Athletic in an email. “While it is only one step forward in the recovery process, it is important and empowering for any survivor of sexual misconduct to tell their story and to have people listen.”
Tucker’s lawyers told The Banner it is “unremarkable” and “not news” that he might have become exposed during a massage. Tucker’s lawyers argued to the paper that athletes often shift around due to discomfort, and massage therapists are the ones who adjust coverings.
In his response posted on social media, Tucker said he has never received any complaints from a massage therapist, has never been dismissed from a massage therapy session and has never been told he was not welcome at any spa.
Tucker said the reporting skews his interactions out of proportion and called the story “desperate tabloid fodder.”
The All-Pro kicker said he hired a defamation law firm upon learning the article was being written. According to his statement, The Banner refused to reveal the full claims being levied against Tucker, and later after sharing “some of this information,” gave him next to no time to provide a response.
Tucker’s attorneys did not respond to a request for comment from The Athletic.
“Once I reviewed the newspaper’s allegations against me, it was apparent that the newspaper was deliberately misconstruing events as nefarious (which were not),” the 35-year-old Tucker wrote.
“We are aware of the Baltimore Banner’s story regarding Justin Tucker as well as his response,” a Ravens spokesperson told The Athletic. “We take any allegations of this nature seriously and will continue to monitor the situation.”
