It’s been a forgettable season for Aaron Rodgers and his New York Jets in 2024.
But the former Green Bay Packers quarterback still had a chance to make history on Sunday in a good way. He could have become the fifth player in NFL history to reach 500 touchdown passes in his career (475 of those came in a Packers uniform). He needed just one TD pass to hit the milestone.
Instead, it was a complete disaster for Rodgers against the Buffalo Bills.
And Rodgers did make history on this day but not the kind he was hoping. Rodgers became the most sacked quarterback in NFL history in a game in which the Bills absolutey smothered the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer.
It kept getting worse and worse for Rodgers with each possession before he was eventually taken out of the game with his team trailing 40-0 in the fourth quarter.
Rodgers threw two interceptions, one inside the Bills red zone, he was sacked four times, including one that resulted in a safety in the second quarter, and later lost a fumble.
Oh, and to add insult to injury he was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty out of bounds following his second interception, leading to the ref and Rodgers having a laugh. Jets fans probably weren’t smiling.
Finally, after a three and out early in the fourth quarter, a drive that featured the fourth sack on Rodgers, Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich saw enough. He pulled Rodgers for veteran backup Tyrod Taylor on their next possession.
While Rodgers was seeking that historic touchdown pass in the game, it was Taylor who would get the first one for the Jets on Sunday. He went 6 for 8 on the scoring drive and found Garrett Wilson for a touchdown. Taylor then threw another passing touchdown late in the 40-14 loss.
Rodgers’ quest for passing touchdown No. 500 will have to wait until the regular season finale. Could it also be his final game in a Jets uniform and of his career?
With Rodgers returning from his Achilles injury and plenty of offensive weapons, which later included ex-Packers wide receiver Davante Adams, the season began with great expectations. But it’s been a great failure for the 4-12 Jets.
Social media reacted to Rodgers’ awful day and his new record.
