Bruno Fernandes has challenged Manchester United to maintain the same level of performance shown in the 2-2 draw at Liverpool in all of our upcoming fixtures.
The skipper was outstanding at Anfield, providing an assist for Lisandro Martinez’s emphatic opener and playing with purpose and panache throughout, as the Reds picked up a point away to the runaway Premier League leaders.
Yet his post-match interview with Sky Sports spoke volumes about what the message needs to be in the wake of such a marked improvement on recent weeks.
“Obviously, [we were] criticised and fairly because the position in the table says it all, that we lost too many points, even today,” said Fernandes. “We can’t be happy with a draw because we need points more than they need points, to be honest.
“I think it’s a really good result and we could have even won the game at the end but I think it’s a fair result. Both teams played really good football, intense. Some good chances from both sides but we can’t be satisfied, to be honest, and I’m pretty upset because, if we can show this today against Liverpool at Anfield, who are first in the league and who have been probably the outstanding team in the league this season, why can’t we do this every week?
“I think, finally, I had a good performance overall and I needed to. I said before the game I think we need much more from ourselves to get something from this season. We need to put some pride out because it’s not enough for us.”
In terms of his own display, the captain added: “Today is one of them games where, in three or four moments, I am driving the ball forward to hold up a little bit more of the ball, if we are trying to go forward, because we know how tough it is to play Liverpool.
“When they win the ball and do a big transition because they have really fast players and really good players on the ball in the midfield to drive the ball through with Curtis Jones and I think Ryan Gravenberch, they are probably one of the best in the league and [with] Alexis Mac Allister [too].”
It’s all about Arsenal in the Emirates FA Cup third round next weekend now for our no.8.
“It’s been here,” he said of this kind of performance. “But it’s not coming through. Today, it came but we need to look forward. We got one point and obviously, with it being 2-1 and then scoring, it’s always good to get a point.
“But we need more and now we have an FA Cup game against Arsenal that’s going to be really tough again. But we want to be in that final again, so we need to get this standard in every game. I wasn’t worried about everyone putting in an effort today because it’s Liverpool and everyone is going to try to do their best.
“I will be more worried about Southampton [in our next league outing] after this performance that we think that it was already good enough, and it’s not, because its going to be a really tough one again.”
