California Lottery player nearly hits $1 billion Mega Millions jackpot

A Mega Millions jackpot ticket sold at a Save Mart in Lemoore, California, a small city near Fresno, came up just short of hitting the $1 billion jackpot Tuesday night.

The lucky player instead is walking away with $1,774,447 after drawing the five correct numbers: 38, 45, 14, 46 and 11, but not the Mega Ball, which was 3.

Although there was no jackpot winner for this draw, four people across California, Montana, Pennsylvania and Wyoming hit five numbers. The jackpot has soared to an estimated $1.15 billion, with a $516.1 million lump sum cash option, ranking as the fifth-largest in the game’s history, according to MegaMillions.com.

Also, a dozen players in California drew four of the correct numbers plus the mega ball and will be taking home $13,770.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350.

In California, proceeds from lottery ticket sales, including unclaimed prizes, benefit public schools. Since the games first arrived in the Golden State in 1985, the California Lottery has raised more than $46 billion for public education, officials said.
