College Football Playoff: New Year’s Day quarterfinals open thread

The quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff roll on to start 2025! On New Year’s Eve, Penn State and Boise State tussled in the Fiesta Bowl, with Penn State comfortably winning and holding superstar running back Ashton Jeanty out of the end zone.

There are still three other games in this round to determine who advances to the semifinals.

Peach Bowl: No. 5 seed Texas vs. No. 4 seed Arizona State (10 am PT)

Rose Bowl: No. 8 seed Ohio State vs. No. 1 seed Oregon (2 pm PT)

Sugar Bowl: No. 7 seed Notre Dame vs. No. 2 seed Georgia (5:45 pm PT)

All games are on ESPN.

If you’re a Seattle Seahawks fan focused on quarterbacks in an otherwise weak 2025 class, there will likely be extra attention paid to Ohio State’s Will Howard, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, and Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard. The season-ending injury to Carson Beck means he will not factor in the CFP.

There are, of course, other top players in all of these games worth watching. I’ll give you one non-QB from every team who’s projected to be in next year’s NFL Draft.

  • Xavier Watts, safety (Notre Dame)
  • Jalon Walker, EDGE (Georgia)
  • Cam Skattebo, running back (Arizona State)
  • Kelvin Banks, OT (Texas)
  • Tez Johnson, wide receiver (Oregon)
  • Emeka Egbuka, wide receiver (Ohio State)
