File this article under “Stories We Never Wanted to Have to Write.” Francisco San Martin, who originated the role of Days of Our Lives‘ Dario Hernandez, has died at age 39.
News of the his passing hit former castmate Camila Banus, who’d played his Salem sibling Gabi when he joined the show in 2011, hard. “What can I say but I love you and rest in peace my friend,” she wrote in an Instagram story. Following another declaration of her affection, she added a sentiment that might well serve as a reminder to us all moving forward: “I wish I’d told you more.”
Upon joining the cast in 2011, San Martin’s Dario went from butting heads with Molly Burnett’s Melanie to falling for her. Less than a year later, however, the character would be written off, with Dario pursuing a career opportunity in Argentina and Melody, despite her feelings, refusing to stand in his way. When Dario returned to the canvas years later, Jordi Vilasuso would assume the part.
But Dario was not to be San Martin’s only daytime stint. In 2017, he would join the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful for a short but memorable stint as Matéo, a handsome handyman who’d soon be drawn into one of Sheila’s nefarious plots. Determined to prove Quinn an unfit mate to Eric, Sheila paid Matéo to seduce her rival. Despite his many charms, Matéo’s efforts failed, with Quinn ultimately remaining faithful to Eric.
San Martin would later take on another sudsy role, this time in the primetime telenovela Jane the Virgin. Here, the lines between fact and fiction blurred thanks to his role as, appropriately enough, a telenovela star named Fabian who was both a love interest for Jane and a rival to her egotistical father.
According to HollywoodLaNews, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office confirmed that San Martin took his own life on Thursday, January 16.
As we mourn yet another life cut short far too soon, join us in sharing a moment of silence for some of the other daytimers we’ve lost in recent months.
