UW-Green Bay men’s basketball head coach Doug Gottlieb referred to Division II Michigan Tech as “Nobody U” in a press conference prior to his team’s home game against the school on Wednesday morning.
Mike Ashley @MikeAshley40
Doug Gottlieb has no idea what he’s talking about. He refers to D2 Michigan Tech as “Nonody U” and implies they’ll win by 20. His shitty 2-10 UWGB team might be in for a rude awakening today at 11 AM when they see the way Tech plays ball the right way. pic.twitter.com/nzrgKdxxEL
Well, karma arrived for Gottlieb in the form of Nobody U’s 72-70 win, dropping Green Bay to 2-11 (0-3 in the Horizon League) in his first year running the program
Michigan Tech trailed 38-25 early in the second half but stormed back behind Marcus Tomashek’s 30 points, including seven in the final 53 seconds.
It’s been a rough week for Gottlieb, who also works as a Fox Sports Radio host with a show that airs weekdays from 3-6 p.m. ET.
On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter made sure to point out the team’s record after Gottlieb publicly doubted him following a report stating Sacramento State has over $50 million in NIL money.
Doug Gottlieb @GottliebShow
Jeezus Shefty, edit what agents tell you… 0.0% chance Sac State has $50m in NIL. https://t.co/8eoU0wwKPO
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter
And Jeezus, Doug. A seven-game losing steak and last place in the Horizon League? Less time on social media and more time in the gym. pic.twitter.com/r58Fpwfvb8
Naturally, many folks reacted to this loss, with Gottlieb notably receiving criticism after his team lost to a school he disrespected.

Doug Gottlieb just lost to a Division II team and I’m pretty sure he has to do his 3 hour radio show in an hour.

As it turns out, the Doug Gottlieb experiment at UW-Green Bay has been a complete disaster. Who could have seen that coming?

This really has been such an embarrassing couple of months for Doug Gottlieb.

Not that he’s failing at his new (& really both) job but that he doesn’t have a grasp on how to ever succeed in it. This just ain’t it chief https://t.co/DxOFqlc8Ga

Green Bay loses a buy game to Michigan Tech. The epitome of brutality.

Lot of people clowning on Gottlieb right now but my personal interest in his radio show has never been higher.

Doug Gottlieb mocked a D2 school, then got schooled by them https://t.co/5hwg54rAmw

They lost this game 😭😭 maybe the most embarrasing 24 hours ever for Gottlieb https://t.co/S6VJ52PEpw

The fact this is real is objectively very funny.

Gottlieb indeed just lost to Division II Nobody U. https://t.co/8gAvXLGy6O
One reaction stood out in particular from college hoops coach Pete Quinn, who noted the erroneous disrespect that Division II teams receive.
Pete Quinn @CoachPeteQuinn_
Of course after losing to Michigan Tech this makes Gottlieb look even more flawed as a college coach. But the truth is this is what the majority of fans and television “experts” think about Division II basketball.

Despite the fact that every season multiple D2s beat D1 programs.… https://t.co/lAeefP0gq0
Quinn specifically pointed out 10-0 Drake, one of four remaining undefeated Division I teams. They are led by head coach Ben McCollum, who won four D-II titles at Northwest Missouri State. And the Bulldogs also have multiple ex-D-II players, namely leading scorer Bennett Stirtz, an ex-Northwest Missouri State star.
Well, funny enough, Gottlieb’s Green Bay team is going to be visiting Drake next, so the karma of him trying (and failing) to dunk on a Division II school will perhaps be delivered for a little while longer.
Tipoff in Des Moines, Iowa is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
