The trailer for Superman recently dropped. The movie chronicles the adventures of the Man of Steel, who tries to delve deep into his Kryptonian heritage. As fans grow excited for yet another version of their beloved superhero, there is one more character in the film that has piqued interest. It is Guy Gardner, portrayed by Nathan Fillion. So, what is so exciting about Gardner, aka Green Lantern, in Superman?
Here is everything you need to know about this iconic character in the film and the DC universe.
Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner Green Lantern in Superman explained
Guy Gardner is one of the staunch members of the Green Lantern Corps. In the trailer, he is shown with his signature bowl haircut and green emerald ring, standing alongside Hawkgirl. The duo visits Stagg Enterprises, preparing to face Superman, with Guy firing his emerald energy towards him.
Speaking about his character, actor Nathan Fillion, who is known for his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad stated, “Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care. That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and flawed people, Guy Gardner is a gold mine.” (via Collider)
For the unaware, Guy Gardner made his debut in the DC Comics Green Lantern #59 in 1968. Hailing from Baltimore, Guy grew up in an abusive household, which shaped him into a stoic and aggressive individual. He used to work as a teacher and social worker, having strong ideals. But, his life took an interesting turn when he was approached by the Green Lantern law enforcement agency. They chose him as a backup to Hal Jordan through the Green Lantern ring due to his strong willpower. However, his journey was not easy as he slipped into a coma following a critical accident.
After his recovery, Guy went on to become one of the most powerful Green Lanterns. His powers include his rough exterior and the ability to create designs like cannons, gloves, and shields. Further, the ring helps him to fly and create energy blasts, among other things.
Despite his tough exterior, Guy possesses a superhero desire to protect the universe. So, it will be interesting to see how James Gunn’s Superman explores this flawed yet lovable character.
