Rory McIlroy has claimed five major titles, but he might be best known for letting several others slip away.

A birdie on the first playoff hole Sunday at the Masters defeated Justin Rose, as he grabbed his first Green Jacket and refused to let another out of his grasp.

McIlroy held a 5-shot lead on the 13th hole, but struggled at times coming in, including a bogey on the 18th hole that forced the playoff.

But unlike other times in his career, he took this one.

It was a strong rally Sunday, especially after the 2011 Masters debacle, when he fell apart with the lead on the second nine and shot an 80. Just last year at Pinehurst, McIlroy missed a couple short putts to fall by a stroke to Bryson DeChambeau.

It had been 10 years since McIlroy won a major, and the newest member of the Masters champions list finally completed the Grand Slam.

Here’s a look at the major titles McIlroy has won in his career.

How many majors has Rory McIlroy won?

McIlroy has four major titles to his name, but the last two came in 2014, as the majors drought enters Year 11.

He’s had 10 shots at a Masters title since his last major, but a second in 2022 and a fourth in 2015 are as close as he’s come.

These are the titles that McIlroy has claimed.

2011 U.S. Open

At Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, McIlroy lapped the field with a 16-under par 268, doubling Jason Day’s 8-under score. McIlroy shot under 70 in all four rounds. 2012 PGA Championship

At Kiawah Island, South Carolina, McIlroy stormed to the lead in the third round with a 5-under par 67 before a 66 in the final round sealed the tournament.

His 13-under total again ran away from the field, winning by eight shots over David Lynn.

2014 Open Championship

At Royal Liverpool, McIlroy’s 17-under par 271 beat Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two strokes despite a 1-under par final round 71. A pair of 66’s and a 68 in the first three rounds gave him a six-shot lead over Rickie Fowler going into the final round.

2014 PGA Championship

At Valhalla Country Club in Louisville, Kentucky, McIlroy took control in the second round for a lead he wouldn’t relinquish.

McIlroy’s 16-under par edged 268 edged Phil Mickelson by a stroke and Fowler and Henrik Stenson by two strokes.
