How Russell Wilson joining the NY Giants impacts the Patriots on draft day

Signing Jameis Winston to a two-year deal didn’t eliminate the possibility of the New York Giants drafting a quarterback at No. 3 overall.

Reports of the Giants agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with Russell Wilson, however, just might.

With both Wilson and Winston in the quarterback room, it becomes less likely that the Giants would take a quarterback at No. 3, one spot ahead of the New England Patriots.

Even though Wilson’s deal is short-term, that allows the Giants the flexibility to move down the board,

The way it looks, the Tennessee Titans will be taking Miami quarterback Cam Ward first overall. Either the Cleveland Browns or the Giants would have to take a quarterback for the Patriots to land one of the two blue-chip prospects, Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter or Colorado dual-threat Travis Hunter.

Basically, the Patriots chances of landing either Carter or Hunter diminished with the Giants signing Wilson.

With New England signing 4-time Pro Bowl receiver Stefon Diggs to a three-year deal, the Patriots helped one of their glaring needs.

They’re still searching for a left tackle.

That might land with the No. 4 overall pick with LSU’s Will Campbell or another top prospect at left tackle.

Although, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said the team wouldn’t be making their picks based on need.

“The best player available is going to be the way it is,” Wolf said Sunday during a season ticket-holder draft event. “Maybe we went for need a little bit too much last year. Obviously that culminated in us drafting Drake Maye, so it wasn’t all bad.

“But, just moving forward, it’s taking the best player, and understanding that we’ve filled a lot of needs already in free agency.”
