Jaden Ivey injury update: Detroit Pistons guard has surgery for broken leg

Jaden Ivey underwent surgery Thursday morning to repair a broken fibula in his left leg, the Detroit Pistons announced. The third-year guard will be re-evaluated in four weeks — opening a window for him to return before the end of the season.

Ivey suffered the injury with 10:07 remaining in the fourth quarter of their win over the Orlando Magic Wednesday night. Magic guard Cole Anthony dove for a loose ball and collided with Ivey’s legs. Ivey was in significant pain after he hit the floor, and was surrounded by personnel from both teams as the Pistons’ medical staff stabilized his leg and carried him off of the floor in a stretcher.

Thursday’s news is a better outcome than many feared when the injury occurred. He damaged no ligaments or tendons, and his tibia is also fully intact, according to a team source. It quickens his recovery timeline, though there’s no guarantee he’ll return this season as the Pistons will be careful with his long-term health.
