JFK Library in Boston to reopen Wednesday after announcing sudden closure

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum will be open to the public Wednesday, according to a social media post, an abrupt reversal from what was described as the closure of the museum until further notice.

A social media post announcing the closure of the museum, published Tuesday, had vanished by Wednesday morning. In its place was a post to Facebook announcing the Library, located in Dorchester on Columbia Point, would be open Wednesday.

It is not clear what prompted officials to declare the museum closed in the first place. A sign posted to the door blamed a recent executive order from the Trump administration, according to NBC10 Boston.

The JFK Library Foundation, which oversees the library, blamed the closure on “the sudden dismissal of federal employees,” according to a statement obtained by The Boston Globe.

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., wrote on X that the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, was to blame.

“The day after President’s Day, Trump’s DOGE has arbitrarily fired staff at the JFK Presidential Library, forcing it to close its doors,” Markey wrote. “Shutting down this vital place of learning, engagement, and revenue creation, if even for a day isn’t just wrong—it degrades the very office of the President.”
