Louisville’s “Reviville” season came to an end in an unfitting fashion on Thursday afternoon, as the 8th-seeded Cardinals were manhandled by No. 9 seed Creighton, 89-75, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
A back-and-forth start turned on a dime with a 12-0 Creighton run midway through the first half that was fueled by a quartet of three-pointers. The Bluejays would stretch their lead to as many as 20, and U of L never really got back into the game after that.
The story of the afternoon was Creighton’s outside shooting. A team that had not shot the ball particularly well from the outside during the final stretch of the regular season hit the three at a blistering pace on Thursday afternoon, connecting on 11-of-24 shots from beyond the arc.
Jamiya Neal was the difference maker for CU, pouring in a career-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. He added 11 rebounds and five assists. Steven Ashworth added 20 points, including a number of key three-pointers when the game was still in doubt.
Louisville was once again led by its backcourt duo of Chucky Hepburn and Terrence Edwards, who combined for 43 of the team’s 75 points. The Cardinals went just 8-of-28 from beyond the arc.
Pretty much every worst fear that we talked about over the last 48 hours was realized this afternoon.
They went nuts from three. We didn’t turn them over. We tried to draw fouls and didn’t get the calls. We consistently got lost and struggled to communicate through their constant screening. Reyne wasn’t close to 100% (love you, man). And they’re x-factor (Neal) went nuts, while ours (J’Vonne Hadley) had a minimal impact.
A bad draw plus a bad performance is typically going to be a bad combination.
Couldn’t be more gutted that it ended this way.
