HOUSTON – Monday, Jan. 20 marks Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday, which just so happens to coincide with Inauguration Day this year, both listed as federal holidays.
What will be closed on Jan. 20?
On Monday, Jan. 20, the majority of government offices and agencies will be closed in observance of the two federal holidays.
Banks, schools and post offices will be closed nationwide on Jan. 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Day.
The United States Postal Service and UPS will be closed on Jan. 20, meaning there will be no mail deliveries. However, FedEx will be operating on Jan. 20 with modified services.

- From 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. celebrate MLK at the Martin Luther King Jr Day at Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center.The event is $15 for people ages 1 and up.
- From 6 p.m. until they close, the Black Heritage Society Soiree will be held at Hotel Icon in Downtown Houston. The event is $85 per person. Special guest Reverend Dr. Derek King, Dr. MLK Jr’s nephew will be in attendance.

- From 6 p.m. until 11 p.m., the MLK Grand Parade Gala will be held at The Mansion in Sugar Land.The event is $150 per person. The red carpet reception starts at 6 p.m. and the awards ceremony begins at 7 p.m.Get tickets here.
MLK Day, Monday, January 20, 2025
- From 7:30 a.m. until Noon, enjoy the MLK Jr Day Freedom Run at Eleanor Tinsley Park.The event is by Buffalo Bayou in Downtown. You’re invited to show up to cheer on the runners.
- At 10 a.m. you can watch the 31st MLK Grande Parade in Midtown.The parade is free and will begin on San Jacinto and Elgin streets in Midtown.
- From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. you can watch the 47th Annual Original MLK Jr Parade and Festival in Downtown Houston.The parade is free and begins at Lamar and Smith Streets and ends with a family festival at City Hall.
- At 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., go to the 2025 MLK Day Observance at Rothko Chapel.The event is free, and you will be able to hear speeches from Dr. King’s life throughout the day.
