MLB Rumors: Red Sox Target Makes Free Agency Decision

Arguably the best relief pitcher in this offseason’s free-agent class will not be joining the Red Sox bullpen.

Tanner Scott, who reportedly entered the weekend with “several” multi-year offers on the table, will be joining the Los Angeles Dodgers, as first reported MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The reigning World Series champions reportedly will sign Scott to a four-year, $72 million contract.

Scott latching on with the Dodgers made Los Angeles’ pitching staff all the more vaunted. The group already was in pretty good shape coming off a run to the Commissioner’s Trophy but grew substantially stronger through the additions of two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell and Japanese pitching phenom Roki Sasaki.

As for the Red Sox, their most noteworthy pitching improvements focused on the rotation. Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler figure to make Boston a much better club, but the Red Sox still could stand to add an above-average arm to the reliever corps.

The clock is ticking for Craig Breslow and company to make such a move, as Boston’s pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training in Fort Myers, Fla., on Feb. 12.
