Representative Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California, had hip replacement surgery on Saturday after falling while on an official trip to Luxembourg, her office said in a statement.

“Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend,” Ian Krager, a spokesman for Ms. Pelosi, said in a statement.

Ms. Pelosi traveled to Luxembourg as part of a congressional delegation attending a ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a pivotal fight during World War II. On Friday, she tripped and fell while going down marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace, according to a person familiar with the incident who was not authorized to comment and spoke on condition of anonymity.

People close to Ms. Pelosi said at the time that she had fractured her hip in the accident, though it was not immediately clear if she would be treated in Europe or the United States. Her spokesman’s statement indicated that her surgery ultimately had taken place at a U.S. military base in Germany.

“Speaker Pelosi is grateful to U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness,” Mr. Krager said in his statement.

Mr. Krager did not specify when Ms. Pelosi planned to return to the United States.

“Speaker Pelosi is enjoying the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes and is ever determined to ensure access to quality health care for all Americans,” he said.
