Severe weather threat paired with record-breaking heat Wednesday

Portland area weather details for Wednesday, March 26, 2025

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Another round of record-breaking heat will help to create atmospheric instability and the chance for thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon around Portland.

Increasing clouds won’t slow the mercury from climbing into record-setting territory Wednesday. Highs are expected to warm into the mid- to upper-70s once again Wednesday. This comes after Tuesday’s record-breaking temperatures in the 80s. Records could be broken from Salem to Portland as severe weather builds along the southern Willamette Valley early Wednesday afternoon.

Powerful and potentially damaging storms will build along the southern Willamette Valley Wednesday afternoon. As these storms move north, they could grow in size and intensity. In some of the strongest storms, we could see large hail of 1-2 inches. Hail that size can easily cause damage to cars exposed to the elements along with potential damage to roofs and other structures.

On top of the hail threat, winds could gust close 60 mph within the stronger cells moving through western Oregon and Washington. An isolated tornado or two isn’t out of the realm of possibility Wednesday as well. Thunderstorms will begin to die around sunset for the Portland- Vancouver area.

Keep in mind that not everyone may see severe thunderstorms this afternoon. But heavy rainfall and abundant lightning may cause plenty of hazards on the roadways this afternoon and evening.

Portland’s stormy, wet, and windy weather forecast for the next week

Temperatures will begin to cool later in the week as rain showers remain. Winds will continue to be gusty Thursday and Friday. Some wind gusts could be as strong as 30 mph. Scattered rain showers will take Portland into the weekend with slightly cooler temperatures.
