Star in 2 hit TV shows announces ALS diagnosis

Eric Dane, best known for his roles in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” announced he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dane, 52, confirmed his diagnosis with People.

“I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” Dane tells People. “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of ‘Euphoria’ next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

Dane portrays Cal Jacobs in “Euphoria,” which airs on HBO. The third season will air in 2026, the Guardian reports. He portrayed Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” from 2006 to 2021 on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS “is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS causes loss of muscle control. The disease gets worse over time.”

The cause of the disease is unknown and it eventually is fatal.

The disease often is referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease after the famous New York Yankees ballplayer who died on June 2, 1941, at age 38 from the illness.
