TOPEKA (KSNT) – Stormont Vail Health has earned recognition awarded to only 10 hospitals nationally for its Mother & Baby Department.
The hospital in Topeka earned the TeamBirth Recognition for its childbirth department, according to a press release from Stormont Vail Health on Dec. 9.
To be recognized, a hospital must demonstrate ongoing commitment to TeamBirth through engagement activities, attest to the implementation and sustainability aspects of TeamBirth and observe TeamBirth ‘huddles’, according to Ariadne Labs’ website.
After implementing the TeamBirth program in March 2023, C-sections for first-time mothers have declined indicating more women are giving birth naturally.
“After almost two years, earning designation as a TeamBirth site is the ultimate reward,” said Melinda Theis, Nurse Manager, Birthplace & Breastfeeding Center. “It reinforces our team’s commitment and celebrates our success in respecting patients’ autonomy throughout their birthing journey. TeamBirth huddles empower patients to take charge of their care, feel heard, and actively participate in their delivery experience. This recognition also reflects our commitment to supporting our community by ensuring every family feels respected and involved in one of life’s most important moments.”
