HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Good Wednesday morning. Areas of dense fog will yet again start off our morning with cloudy skies and warm temperatures in the 50s.
Skies remain overcast early with a very humid feel to the day; winds will be breezy from the southwest with occasional gusts between 20 to 25 miles per hour. Today is a 48 First Alert Weather Day for the potential of strong to severe thunderstorms developing by late morning into the afternoon. A cold front approaches the Tennessee Valley by late morning and will bring a broken line of heavy rainfall and embedded thunderstorms. Some storms can produce 40+ mph wind gusts, frequent lightning and locally heavy rainfall. With the gusty wind threat, please keep an eye on your outside holiday decorations. The line of storms should move out of Northeast Alabama by 3 to 4 PM with winds shifting to the northwest.
Colder and drier air will surge in behind the front late this evening with overnight wind gusts up to 20 miles per hour. Thursday morning temperatures are looking much colder in the middle to upper 30s by daybreak. Thursday and Friday are similar days with sunny skies and cooler high temperatures in the 40s to lower 50s.
The weekend forecast is trending colder, but sunny, high temps only reach the middle 40s for Saturday and Sunday. The Winter Solstice is at 3:20 AM CT Saturday and we will officially be in the winter season.
