TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (WFLA) — Pam Bondi grew up in Temple Terrace, she worked in the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s office as a prosecutor, and she served two terms as the elected Florida State Attorney General.
Now, she is stepping on to the national stage.
President-elect Donald Trump nominated her to be his U.S. Attorney General after Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration.
Wednesday, Bondi went through several hours of questioning during Senate confirmation hearings.
Bondi spoke about her long record as a prosecutor.
“I did my best to keep Florida safe, to continue to stand up for victims of crime and to fight the opioid crisis and the drug crisis,” Bondi told the confirmation committee.
She is also aware the office of U.S. Attorney General has been sharply criticized in recent years.
“My overriding objective will be to return the Department of Justice to its core mission of keeping Americans safe and vigorously prosecuting criminals,” Bondi said.
Democrats asked if she would pardon Jan. 6 rioters who invaded the Capitol in 2021.
“Senator, if confirmed as Attorney General of the United States, the pardons, of course, fall under the President, but if asked to look at those cases, I will look at each case and advise on a case by case basis,” Bondi said.
Her confirmation is expected to go smoothly by the Republican-dominated Senate.
