Tom Holland Reacts to ‘Spider-Man’ 4 Announcement

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

The name of the next “Spider-Man” film is “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” That’s the word from Sony Picture during their Cinemacon presentation. Tom Holland couldn’t be at CinemaCon because he was busy filming “The Odyssey” in Europe, but the audience did get to watch a prerecorded message from the Marvel star.

Holland was uncharacteristically tight-lipped about the sequel, but he did say, “It’s a fresh new start. That’s all I can say.”

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” leaves the titular hero in a position where he has just about nothing but a “fresh new start.” In order to save the world from being invaded by a seemingly endless number of Spider-Man villains from across the multiverse, Peter Parker has Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) cast a spell that has everyone in the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including all of his friends and loved ones.

The fact that the film is called “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has a couple of obvious implications. For one, this was an actual event in the comics that took place after Parker made a deal with the devilish Mephisto. The deal resurrected Peter’s Aunt May and his old friend Harry Osborn while erasing the knowledge of his secret identity from the world. But at the same time, it erased his marriage to Mary Jane Watson from existence.

Along with the obvious similarities with Parker’s current status quo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it could answer the question of who Sadie Sink is playing in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”

Many fans have been speculating that Sink is playing Jean Grey from the X-Men, but the name “Brand New Day” pushes another contestant into the ring, so to speak. In the comics, the event introduced a redheaded female superhero named Jackpot. Three different women would go on to use that name as their superhero codename, and there’s a decent chance Sadie Sink is about to play one of them.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” may be the fourth “Spider-Man” movie but it will be his eighth film in the role. He premiered as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War,” and went on to play him in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” his theaters July 31, 2026.
