Tufts grad student Rumeysa Ozturk held by feds in Louisiana

Government attorneys say Tufts University graduate student Rumeysa Ozturk, who was taken into custody on Tuesday in Somerville, Massachusetts, was taken out of state before a federal judge issued an order limiting the government’s ability to move her. Court documents reviewed by NewsCenter 5 on Thursday also show that the government promised to provide a more complete timeline of the arrest and transfer in a formal response that is due by Friday. Ozturk, 30, a Turkish national who was maintaining a valid F-1 status, was detained near her home as she left to meet with friends to break her Ramadan fast, according to her attorney, Mahsa Khanbabai.A representative of the Department of Homeland Security said the student “engaged in activities in support of Hamas.”Ozturk was taken to be held in Louisiana. In a document, the government attests she was already outside of Massachusetts when her attorney filed a writ of habeas corpus on Tuesday and when U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani ordered that Ozturk not be moved outside of Massachusetts without at least 48 hours of advance notice to the court.Talwani also gave immigration officials until Friday to formally respond to a petition for a writ of habeas corpus in the Ozturk case. This is commonsense security.”Meanwhile, the university is working to learn more about the circumstances of why the student was apprehended and will connect them with external legal resources if the student requests assistance, the school said.Organizers of the Palestinian Youth Movement held an “emergency rally” Wednesday evening for Ozturk.
