‘Virgin River’ Season 6 ending explained by star Alexandra Breckenridge

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the “Virgin River” Season 6 finale.

Love is in the air in the “Virgin River” Season 6 finale as Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) finally tie the knot.

Of course, the happy couple encounters quite a few bumps along the way, including a family health emergency and a case of the cold feet.

Elsewhere, the hit Netflix series leaves viewers on the edge of their seat with major cliffhangers involving other characters, including a disappearance and a surprise proposal.

In an interview with TODAY.com, star Alexandra Breckenridge, who plays Mel, breaks down some of the biggest moments from the season and tells us the hardest scene to film.

Here’s what happens in the “Virgin River” Season 6 finale.

Jack and Mel get married

At long last, Jack and Mel say “I do” in the Season 6 finale.

“It’s just beautiful. It’s gorgeous and it’s not cheesy. It’s just really sweet,” Breckenridge says of the wedding.

But it’s not without drama. Panic ensues on the morning of their wedding when Mel’s biological father Everett (John Allen Nelson) has a heart attack.

Breckenridge says the conversation between Mel and Doc at the hospital after Everett’s heart attack was the hardest to shoot.

With Everett in stable condition, the bride and groom decide to go ahead with their scheduled nuptials, even though it’s tempting to postpone until the father of the bride is out of the hospital.

While getting ready with her bridesmaids, Mel asks to speak to Jack in private. She explains that she feels like the luckiest girl in the world who is a million miles away. Mel tells Jack she initially thought she was distracted because of her father’s heart attack, but then realized she was nervous to trust in forever again since the people she loves have a tendency of disappearing.

“I can’t lose you, Jack, but I can’t walk down the aisle with all these ghosts floating in my head,” she says.

Jack whisks his bride away on horseback to a tranquil spot they’ve visited before and they have a raw conversation about Mel’s fears. She says Everett’s heart attack brought her back to the feelings she had when she lost both of her parents, her husband and her daughter.

Breckenridge says Mel’s crisis the day of her wedding was brought on by her father’s heart attack.

“I think Mel really wanted to move into her marriage without her past and I think that she just got flustered. She got into a moment that she wasn’t expecting. A lot had taken place the night before. She definitely needed a moment,” Breckenridge says.

After reassuring Mel that he’s not going anywhere, Jack takes her back to their wedding, where everyone is waiting for the happy couple. Doc (Tim Matheson) walks the bride down the aisle and the groom surprises her by wearing his military uniform.

With the help of Doc and Cameron (Mark Ghanime), Everett surprises Mel by showing up at the wedding, even after his heart attack. He plays the song he just finished for her and she and Jack dance to it for their first dance.

Mel and Jack have a serious shot at parenthood

Over the course of the last few seasons, Mel and Jack have made it clear that they’re excited to welcome children one day. After Mel experienced a miscarriage, the couple realized their route to parenthood may look a bit different and could involve adoption.

In the Season 6 finale, Mel gets a call from a local girl named Marley (Rachel Drance) who had attended Mel’s new birthing center.

Marley was set to give away her unborn child to a local couple but calls Mel on the morning after her wedding to tell her the other couple may be backing out of the adoption. Marley proceeds to tell Mel that she wants her and Jack to adopt her child.

“Mel and Jack are definitely gonna end up having a child at some point. We don’t know when it’s gonna be. They’re moving towards that direction. It might be a bumpy road,” Breckenridge says.

Mike proposes to Brie

Things have been going well between Mike (Marco Grazzini) and Brie (Zibby Allen), but she complicated matters when she slept with Brady (Ben Hollingsworth) earlier this season. Their tryst occurred after Brie revealed that Brady’s girlfriend Lark (Elise Gatien) was dating Jimmy, a criminal from a prior season who is the father of her daughter.

After sleeping together, Brady and Brie continued to date their significant others but were torn with their feelings for each other. In the finale, Brie cries at Jack and Mel’s wedding after talking with Brady, who declared his love for her. At the end of the night, Mike proposes to Brie and she tells him she slept with Brady. Shock of all shocks, he says he already knows.

“I’m on the edge of my seat wondering what Mike and Brie are gonna do. To be honest with you, that’s the cliffhanger that I’m most excited to know about,” Breckenridge says.

Lark leaves town, leaving Brady alone and broke

When Brady learned that Lark was working with Jimmy to keep tabs on him and steal his money, he was devastated and confronted her. She declared that her love for him was “real” and Brady eventually decided to give their relationship another try.

In the season finale, Lark sneaks a peek of Brie and Brady chatting at Mel and Jack’s wedding and overhears Brady saying he still loves Brie and will never feel the same way for someone else. When Lark tells Brady she saw him talking to Brie, he says it was nothing.

Later in the night, Lark skips town with her daughter and withdraws all the money from Brady’s bank account.

Doc prepares for a battle over his clinic

Annette O’Toole as Hope and Tim Matheson as Doc.Netflix

Earlier this season, Doc came to the rescue of a patient experiencing a medical emergency. In the heat of the moment, he took an unconventional approach to saving the patient’s life while Denny (Kai Bradbury) was on hand to assist him.

Although the patient survived, Doc’s quick thinking later landed him in hot water and led to a medical investigation when another doctor questioned his methods. He also got his medical license suspended.

In the finale, Doc learns that another medical network is looking to expand their footprint into Virgin River and wants his clinic. It explains why they’ve been trying to dig into his professional past. Along with Hope (Annette O’Toole), Doc prepares for a battle.

Breckenridge calls the threat to Doc’s clinic “terrifying” and says it could have implications for Mel’s birthing center.

“I don’t know if the birthing center is gonna be affected by that. I would imagine it might not be because Mel’s a midwife and I think she can still run the birthing center if a clinic closes,” she says.

She’s hopeful about Doc’s future — “I mean, you can’t close the cliic.”

Preacher and Kaia talk about marriage

Kandyse McClure as Kaia and Colin Lawrence as Preacher.Netflix

When Preacher (Colin Lawrence) started dating Kaia (Kandyse McClure), he knew she might want to take things slow since she was newly separated from her husband. Throughout the season, she’s stuck by his side during his legal trial and their bond has deepened.

The wedding stirs up a mix of feelings for Kaia, who admits she’s grateful for her divorce and isn’t sure how she feels about remarrying.

Brady encourages Kaia to be open to marriage even if her first one didn’t work. Later on, she tells Preacher she’s not sure if another wedding is in the cards for her, adding that she would marry him if she does feel compelled to give marriage another try. Preacher responds by reassuring her that they have nothing but time to explore their bond.

Lizzie and Denny await the birth of their daughter

Preparing for parenthood comes with its own set of pressure and stress, but Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale) and Denny have also had to contend with Denny’s Huntington’s Disease diagnosis as Lizzie’s pregnancy has progressed.

In the finale, they both say that it’s been hard to balance feeling joyful about their baby’s arrival while navigating their fears for Denny’s future. Ultimately, the young couple agrees to take their relationship slow and savor the moment.

Muriel has a new love interest

Teryl Rothery as Muriel.Netflix

After breaking off her May-December romance with Cameron, Muriel (Teryl Rothery) got back into the dating game earlier this season. Despite her hesitation since she’d recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, she started seeing a new guy.

Muriel attends Mel and Jack’s wedding with her new beau and has a blast. She even runs into Cameron at the party and asks how things are going with his ex-turned-current girlfriend.

The finale ends with Charmaine going missing

Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) was supposed to help Mel and her bridal party do their hair for the wedding, but never showed up. On the morning after the wedding, Mel tells Jack she’s concerned about Charmaine since her phone keeps going to voicemail, so he shows up to her house to check on her.

As Jack knocks on the door, it opens and he enters the house. It’s clear that someone has broken in, so he starts to look around and calls out Charmaine’s name. When he enters the nursery, he has a look of horror on his face and the finale ends.

Charmaine was in the process of taking out a restraining order on Calvin (David Cubitt), the father of her twins, so fans are left to wonder if he may have something to do with her disappearance.

“Hopefully Charmaine’s OK. I’m assuming she’s OK somewhere. I’m hoping,” Breckenridge says.
