From the time Devin Williams became the Milwaukee Brewers‘ closer in the last two months of the 2022 season, the goal was to get the ball into his hand in the ninth inning.
But beginning Thursday afternoon, when the Brewers open the season against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, the blueprint for a victory will be to keep it from him. If Williams takes the mound, it likely means the Brewers are three outs away from a loss.
With just one year left before free agency, Williams was traded io New York in the offseason for Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin. Cortes will start Saturday in the second game of the series for the Brewers.
