Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot is expecting tonight’s Premier League battle with Newcastle to be one played at a high intensity and with plenty of physicality.

The defender has only faced three clubs (Liverpool, Brighton and Aston Villa) more often than the eight occasions he has lined up against the Magpies in his career and is therefore well-set to speak about the test that our visitors are likely to pose in the 20:00 GMT kick-off at Old Trafford.

Eddie Howe’s side have won each of their last four outings against all competitions and will provide a true challenge for Dalot and his Reds team-mates, who are looking to end 2024 by getting back in the win column after three successive defeats.

“It’s always tough games, they are a really intense team, really physical also,” Diogo tells club media in an exclusive interview, which you can watch a section from above.

“Every time we play against them, we have to be really ready for a high-intensity game, so that’s what I expect.

“I expect a high-intensity profile of players, a proper Premier League game. Hopefully, we can be on our best levels so we can beat them.”

Dalot played in last season’s corresponding fixture at Old Trafford, a 3-2 win in our last meeting with Newcastle back in May and, while things have changed in the home dugout since then with Ruben Amorim becoming our head coach, the Portugal international knows that we will have to be on top form again to take another maximum return against the Magpies.

Recent results have not quite gone our way, but Diogo understands the squad’s quality and it goes without saying that our home supporters’ backing can have a big impact on a night like this at the Theatre of Dreams.

“They have players that can play high-intensity football, they are really physical, so they are really strong,” Dalot says about Newcastle.

“Like I say, we have to be on our best level to win a game like this. But I think if we are in our best shape, we can win the game.”
