Why is ‘Ted Lasso’ coming back after Jason Sudeikis hinted it was over?

“Ted Lasso” has officially been renewed for season 4, despite the show’s cocreator and star Jason Sudeikis previously suggesting that season 3 would be its final chapter.

During a March 2023 interview with Deadline, Sudeikis said that season 3 of “Ted Lasso” marked “the end of this story that we wanted to tell.” That same month, he told Entertainment Tonight that “the idea was to do three years” of “Ted Lasso.”

Plans have clearly changed, as AppleTV+ announced on Friday, March 14, that the sports comedy-drama will return for a fourth season. Sudeikis also shared the news during a Friday appearance on Jason and Travis Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast.

“We’re writing season 4 now. Ted’s coaching a women’s team,” Sudeikis teased.

When Travis asked whether Ted is “coming back to the States” for season 4 after coaching soccer in England for the first three seasons, Sudeikis quipped, “Too many questions.”

While Sudeikis previously said that season 3 completed the story he and his collaborators set out to tell, Ted pivoting to women’s soccer sounds like the start of something new.

Giving the kindhearted protagonist a fresh challenge no doubt helped justify a fourth season, but there’s also demand for more feel-good content like “Ted Lasso” at the moment.

“If ever there was a show the world needed more of right now, it would be ‘Ted Lasso’,” Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, said in a statement, per Deadline. “We — along with countless fans around the globe — have been rooting for another season, and it is an incredible feeling to be able to say, ‘Yes, it’s happening!’”

Ted taking on a new team suggests that season 4 will introduce new characters, although there will be familiar faces as well. Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins) are all slated to reprise their roles, and Deadline reported that Juno Temple (Keeley Jones) is in negotiations to return as well.

A release date for season 4 of “Ted Lasso” has not yet been announced. According to Deadline, production is expected to begin in July.

Seasons 1-3 of “Ted Lasso” are available to stream on AppleTV+.
